Hydrogen breath testing for SIBO is a test which measures the amount of hydrogen released in breath as a result of the bacterial digestion of ingested sugars. Higher hydrogen values, suggest an excess growth of small bowel bacteria.

Why is a Hydrogen Breath Test for SIBO Done?

Hydrogen breath testing for SIBO is performed to diagnose an overgrowth of gut bacteria in the small intestines. This can cause nausea, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, malnutrition, weight loss and malabsorption.

How does One Prepare for Hydrogen Breath Test for SIBO?

To achieve accurate results, you must have an empty stomach before the procedure. You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the test. You should also avoid eating slowly digesting foods like beans, bran or other high fiber cereals the day before testing. You should not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 30 minutes before or at any time during the test. You will be asked to 25g of a prescription lactulose solution dissolved in 8 oz. of water 1 hr. before your test.

How is a Hydrogen Breath Test for SIBO Performed?

After meeting the preconditions for testing, patients will be asked to breathe into a small machine every 15 minutes for up to 3 hrs. The machine will provide results for analysis.

What Happens After a Breath Test for SIBO is Done?

This procedure takes about up to 3 hrs. Patients will be able to return to a normal diet and routine after the procedure.
